Might the Anti Smoking Law in Britain Force Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Net?

A lot has been reported in the press recently regarding the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the smoking ban in England. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax breaks to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However will the internet adaptation of this classic game offer a reprieve, or might it never compare to its bricks and mortar opposite?
Bingo is an established game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game recently had witnessed a recent comeback in appeal with younger people opting to hit the bingo halls in place of the clubs on a weekend. This is all about to be reversed with the introduction of the anti cigarette law around England and Wales.
No more will players be able to puff on cigarettes while marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public location will not be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most common places where people like to puff on cigarettes.
The outcome of the smoking ban can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Of course they haven’t cast aside this ancient game?
The answer is on the web. Players realise that they can participate in bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and smoke and in the end, enjoy big jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the internet is unlikely to replace the communal part of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of players the law has left a lot of bingo players with little choice.
