Could the Smoking Ban in the UK Drive Bingo Players On to the Internet?

A lot has been stated in the press just a while ago about the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the cigarette ban in the UK. Conditions have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge aid to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. But will the web variation of this traditional game offer a escape, or will it never compare to its real life equivalent?
Bingo is an familiar game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game recently had seen a recent increase in appeal with younger people opting to hit the bingo parlours rather than the clubs on a Friday night. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the smoking ban across United Kingdom.
No more will players be allowed to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 all public areas will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most common locations where people enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo parlors. Players have plummeted and the industry is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Certainly they have not cast aside this enduring game?
The answer is on the internet. People know that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and cig and in the end, enjoy huge jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on on the web is unlikely to replace the collective aspect of going over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the law has left many bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
